1970年4月26日，《建立世界知識產(chǎn)權(quán)組織公約》正式生效，世界知識產(chǎn)權(quán)組織這一致力于保護知識產(chǎn)權(quán)的政府間國際組織正式成立。2000年10月，世界知識產(chǎn)權(quán)組織決定，從2001年起將每年的4月26日定為“世界知識產(chǎn)權(quán)日”，旨在世界范圍內(nèi)樹立尊重知識、崇尚科學和保護知識產(chǎn)權(quán)的意識，營造鼓勵知識創(chuàng)新和保護知識產(chǎn)權(quán)的法律環(huán)境。
2013年世界知識產(chǎn)權(quán)日來臨之際，世界知識產(chǎn)權(quán)組織總干事弗朗西斯·高銳在致辭中指出：“我要對下一代說的就是：不斷創(chuàng)造，不斷創(chuàng)新。同時還要不斷思考，在未來對創(chuàng)造和創(chuàng)新的社會管理中，知識產(chǎn)權(quán)應(yīng)當如何完成其使命”。
每年的“世界知識產(chǎn)權(quán)日”都有一個主題：2012年的主題是“天才創(chuàng)新家”。世界知識產(chǎn)權(quán)日來臨之際，世界知識產(chǎn)權(quán)組織總干事弗朗西斯·高銳在致辭中指出，我們的發(fā)展離不開創(chuàng)新，沒有創(chuàng)新，作為人類，我們就將原地踏步。
