　　那么“年”究竟是怎么來(lái)的呢?民間主要有兩種說(shuō)法：一種說(shuō)的是，古時(shí)候，有一種叫做“年”的兇猛怪物，每到臘月二十，變出竄村挨戶，覓食人肉，殘殺生靈。有一個(gè)臘月三十的晚上，“年”到了一個(gè)村莊，正好有兩個(gè)孩子在比賽牛鞭子。“年”突然聽(tīng)到半空中響起了啪啪的鞭聲，嚇得望風(fēng)而逃。他竄到另一個(gè)村莊，又迎頭望到了一家門(mén)口曬著一件大紅衣服，它不知道衣服是什么東西，嚇得趕緊掉頭逃跑。后來(lái)它又到了一個(gè)村莊，朝一戶人家門(mén)里一瞧，只見(jiàn)里面燈火輝煌，刺得它頭昏眼花，只好又夾著尾巴溜了。人們由此摸準(zhǔn)了“年”有怕響、怕紅，怕光的弱點(diǎn)，便想到許多抵御它的方法，于是逐漸演化成今天過(guò)年的風(fēng)俗。

　　另一種說(shuō)法是，我國(guó)古代的字書(shū)把“年”字放在禾部，以禾風(fēng)調(diào)雨順，五谷豐登。由于谷禾一般都是一年一熟。所以“年”便被引申為歲名了。
